Methodology & sourcing

This page does more for the platform's credibility than any tagline. It states exactly where each series comes from, what each source gets wrong, and how conflicts between them are handled.

Sourcing principles

  1. 01

Every number carries its source and its date

No figure appears on this platform without an attribution line naming the publishing body and the vintage of the observation. This is enforced in code, not by editorial discipline: the component that renders a figure takes the whole series object, so a value cannot be displayed apart from its provenance.

  2. 02

Data and narrative are visually separate

Dashboards look like dashboards and analysis looks like analysis. Blending the two — presenting a chart inside an argument so the argument inherits the chart's authority — is the specific technique that erodes trust in official communications, and it is avoided here structurally.

  3. 03

Where sources disagree, both are published

Official and market readings of the exchange rate and of inflation give different answers. ZIX shows both and states the spread. It does not average them, reconcile them silently, or choose the one that supports a narrative.

  4. 04

    Gaps are shown as gaps

A series with no observation renders as a dash, never as zero. A series with no verified source renders as an explicit gap panel naming what would be needed to fill it. Omitting an unavailable series would convert 'we do not know' into 'there is nothing to know'.

  5. 05

    Vintages are not harmonised

Different series have different latest observations — growth is current, consumer prices stop years earlier. ZIX does not forward-fill, interpolate or align vintages to make a dashboard look uniform. The unevenness is a finding about Zimbabwean statistics, not a rendering defect.

  6. 06

Derived figures are labelled as derived

Anything ZIX calculates rather than retrieves — the trade balance, the implied inflation rate, the approvals-to-realised ratio — is attributed to ZIX and its arithmetic is stated. A calculated number is never presented as a published one.

Source register

Each institution ZIX draws on, what it publishes, and its known limitations. The limitations are the point: a source register that lists only strengths is marketing.

World Bank — World Development Indicators

multilateraldata.worldbank.org/country/zimbabwe ↗

Primary source for internationally comparable macro series. WDI figures for Zimbabwe are compiled from national accounts supplied by ZIMSTAT and the RBZ, so they inherit those bodies' limitations; the World Bank's contribution is consistency of method across countries and years, not independent measurement. Series are pulled live from the WDI API and carry the vintage the API reports.

International Monetary Fund — World Economic Outlook database

multilateralwww.imf.org/en/Countries/ZWE ↗

Pulled live from the IMF DataMapper API. The IMF is the only source publishing several series for Zimbabwe at all — general government debt and the fiscal balance among them — and where it overlaps with the World Bank the two sometimes disagree sharply, as on consumer prices from 2022. IMF staff figures reflect staff judgement rather than national submissions alone. World Economic Outlook projections are excluded from this platform; only actual years are published.

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency

governmentwww.zimstat.co.zw/ ↗

The official statistical authority and the origin of most national accounts and CPI data. Methodology for the CPI has changed repeatedly with the currency regime — including suspensions of the year-on-year series — so ZIMSTAT inflation is not continuously comparable across breaks. ZIX marks those breaks rather than splicing across them.

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe

central bankwww.rbz.co.zw/ ↗

Source for monetary policy decisions, official exchange rates, reserve money and remittance inflows. The RBZ is both the publisher of the official rate and a participant in the market that rate describes; ZIX therefore treats official FX data as a policy statement as much as a measurement, and pairs it with market readings wherever a verifiable one exists.

Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency

governmentwww.zidainvest.com/ ↗

Source for licensed and approved investment projects. Approval values are announced intentions, not committed or disbursed capital, and historically a large share has not converted. ZIX reports approvals and realised FDI as separate series and never as one number.

Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries

industryczi.co.zw/ ↗

Source for the annual Manufacturing Sector Survey, including capacity utilisation. Survey-based and self-reported by member firms, so it skews toward formal, larger manufacturers and away from the informal sector. Valuable as a directional read from inside industry; not a census.

Zimbabwe Stock Exchange

marketwww.zse.co.zw/ ↗

Source for listed market capitalisation, turnover and index levels. Local-currency index moves in a high-inflation regime largely track the currency rather than real value, so ZSE series are shown in USD terms or alongside the exchange rate, never as a bare local-currency percentage.

InvestIQ Oak Wealth — daily ZSE and VFEX price sheet

marketwww.investiqoak.co.zw/ ↗

Source for daily closing prices on the ZSE and VFEX. The sheet arrives by email as a PDF and is read automatically, with fixed rules rather than AI, because a model reading a price sheet invents plausible figures. Nothing is published until four checks pass: the email authenticates as coming from InvestIQ's own domain; every row matches a security ZIX has verified independently, so identifiers are never taken from the sheet; each row's previous close, change and percentage agree with each other; and no price moves implausibly against the last session ZIX published. A sheet that fails any check is held for a person to review. A broker's sheet is a compilation of exchange data rather than the exchange's own record, and on thinly traded counters a closing price can be a single small trade.

Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe

industrychamberofminesofzimbabwe.com/ ↗

Source for mining production and outlook surveys. Membership-based, and gold figures in particular understate output that leaves the country outside formal channels. Treated as a floor on production, not a total.

ZIX estimate

in house/data/methodology ↗

A figure calculated by ZIX from other published series rather than taken from a single source. Every ZIX estimate states its inputs and its arithmetic on the methodology page, and is always labelled as an estimate in the interface.

How conflicts between sources are handled

The rules applied when two credible sources disagree.

Live series and their definitions

Definitions below are republished verbatim from the World Bank's own indicator metadata, retrieved live.

Real GDP growth

NY.GDP.MKTP.KD.ZG

Gross domestic product is the total income earned through the production of goods and services in an economic territory during an accounting period. It can be measured in three different ways: using either the expenditure approach, the income approach, or the production approach. This indicator denotes the percentage change over each previous year of the constant price (base year 2015) series in United States dollars.

Compiled from: Country official statistics, National Statistical Organizations and/or Central Banks; National Accounts data files, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); Staff estimates, World Bank (WB)

ZIX caveat: Compiled from national accounts supplied by ZIMSTAT. Rebasing and the scale of informal activity mean the level of GDP is far more uncertain than the growth rate; single-year moves under two points should be read as noise.

Consumer price inflation

FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG

Inflation as measured by the consumer price index reflects the annual percentage change in the cost to the average consumer of acquiring a basket of goods and services that may be fixed or changed at specified intervals, such as yearly.

Compiled from: International Financial Statistics database, International Monetary Fund (IMF)

ZIX caveat: An annual average, which is not what the RBZ and ZIMSTAT monthly releases report. Zimbabwe's inflation argument is mostly people comparing different measures: an annual average above 100% and a single-digit monthly print can both be correct about the same economy. The series also breaks at each currency regime change, has been suspended more than once, and must not be spliced onto the monthly releases.

Total reserves

FI.RES.TOTL.CD

Reserve assets are external assets, including monetary gold, that are readily available to and controlled by monetary authorities for meeting balance of payments financing needs, for intervention in exchange markets to affect the currency exchange rate, and for other related purposes (such as maintaining confidence in the currency and the economy, and serving as a basis for foreign borrowing). Reserve assets must be denominated and settled in foreign currency. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This indicator is expressed in United States dollars.

Compiled from: International Financial Statistics database, International Monetary Fund (IMF)

ZIX caveat: Includes gold at market valuation. The import cover this implies is thin; the level describes policy space rather than solvency.

Diaspora remittances received

BX.TRF.PWKR.CD.DT

Personal remittances comprise personal transfers and compensation of employees. Personal transfers consist of all current transfers in cash or in kind made or received by resident households to or from nonresident households. Personal transfers thus include all current transfers between resident and nonresident individuals. Compensation of employees refers to the income of border, seasonal, and other short-term workers who are employed in an economy where they are not resident and of residents employed by nonresident entities. Data are the sum of two items defined in the sixth edition of the IMF's Balance of Payments Manual: personal transfers and compensation of employees. Data are in current U.S. dollars.

Compiled from: IMF balance of payments data, International Monetary Fund (IMF); Staff estimates, World Bank (WB)

ZIX caveat: Formal channels only. Informal cross-border transfers are widely held to be material and are not captured, so this figure is a floor.

GDP at current prices

NY.GDP.MKTP.CD

Gross domestic product is the total income earned through the production of goods and services in an economic territory during an accounting period. It can be measured in three different ways: using either the expenditure approach, the income approach, or the production approach. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This indicator is expressed in United States dollars.

Compiled from: Country official statistics, National Statistical Organizations and/or Central Banks; National Accounts data files, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); Staff estimates, World Bank (WB)

GDP per capita

NY.GDP.PCAP.CD

Gross domestic product is the total income earned through the production of goods and services in an economic territory during an accounting period. It can be measured in three different ways: using either the expenditure approach, the income approach, or the production approach. The core indicator has been divided by the general population to achieve a per capita estimate.

Current account balance

BN.CAB.XOKA.CD

Balance of current transactions (transactions in goods and services, earned income and transfer income) between residents and non-residents. The term current account balance is used in the external accounts and is expressed from the perspective of resident units. The term current external balance is used in the national accounts and is expressed from the perspective of the non-resident units, and therefore with the opposite sign. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This indicator is expressed in United States dollars.

Compiled from: Balance of Payments Statistics Yearbook and data files, International Monetary Fund (IMF)

External debt stock

DT.DOD.DECT.CD

Total external debt is debt owed to nonresidents repayable in currency, goods, or services. Total external debt is the sum of public, publicly guaranteed, and private nonguaranteed long-term debt, use of IMF credit, and short-term debt. Short-term debt includes all debt having an original maturity of one year or less and interest in arrears on long-term debt. Data are in current U.S. dollars.

Compiled from: International Debt Statistics, World Bank (WB)

ZIX caveat: Excludes arrears and quasi-fiscal liabilities that IMF staff reports treat as debt. The true obligation is higher than this line.

Series ZIX could not source

Full disclosure of every series the platform wanted and does not have.

Series ZIX could not source, and why
SeriesWould come fromWhy it is missing
Parallel market rate (ZWG per USD)ZIXNo verified public series exists. Parallel-market rates are quoted informally and vary by city, by trade size and by settlement method, so there is no single authoritative print to cite. ZIX will not publish an estimate of the most consequential number in the economy without a documented collection method behind it.
Manufacturing capacity utilisationCZIPublished once a year inside the CZI Manufacturing Sector Survey, as a PDF report rather than a data feed. Using it requires either a data-sharing arrangement with CZI or a manual transcription process with its own documented method.
ZIDA-approved investment valueZIDAZIDA reports approvals in periodic statements and press releases, not as a machine-readable series. Realised FDI is published by the World Bank and is charted on the investment page; approvals are not, and the two are never combined.
Gold delivered through formal channelsChamber of Mines, RBZDelivery volumes are reported by Fidelity Printers and the Chamber of Mines in statements rather than as data. Zimbabwe also reports sparsely to UN Comtrade, so the usual mirror-statistics workaround does not close the gap either.
Lithium concentrate export valueChamber of MinesRequires commodity-level trade data. Zimbabwe's own submissions to UN Comtrade are incomplete, and the keyless preview endpoint returns only partial partner records, so no defensible total can be assembled from free sources.

Corrections

Corrections are logged rather than made silently. Where a figure or a claim is amended after publication, the change is recorded with its date and the reason, and the original is preserved.

Live series update automatically as their upstream databases are revised; that is revision, not correction, and it is visible in the vintage shown on each figure. A correction is an error on ZIX’s part.
